NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY
Get to the Root of the Problem
What is Neuromuscular Therapy in Massage?

While the term Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) may sound intimidating, the results are incredibly effective when integrated into a massage treatment. To help you better understand how NMT can benefit you, and why it’s an essential part of my massage practice, I’ve created this guide.

Neuromuscular Therapy is a specialized technique of soft tissue manipulation aimed at relieving chronic muscle and nervous system disorders. The focus of NMT is to address trigger points, improve circulation, relieve nerve compression, and treat conditions such as postural issues and repetitive movement injuries (Granger, 2020). By incorporating NMT into my massage techniques, the goal is to get to the source of your pain, restore balance to the affected area, and help your joints, muscles, and biomechanics return to proper function.

The Origins of Neuromuscular Therapy

NMT was developed in 1925 in Hertfordshire, England, by Stanley Lief and Boris Chaitow. The technique emphasized thorough assessment and treatment of soft tissue dysfunction with the goal of alleviating pain at its source, rather than simply addressing symptoms. NMT was introduced in North America and, since the 1990s, has evolved with the development of new manual therapy techniques.

As a Massage Therapist, I’m committed to staying up-to-date with the latest NMT methods. The Canadian Academy of Pain Management recognizes NMT as an effective treatment for soft tissue injuries. I integrate NMT into every session, using careful palpation and assessment, to help manage your pain and increase your range of motion.

Neuromuscular Therapy vs. Deep Tissue Massage

It’s important to note that while Neuromuscular Therapy can sometimes be confused with deep tissue massage, the two are distinct. Deep tissue massage focuses on muscles and tendons, while NMT targets the nervous system. Although deep tissue massage can be used with therapeutic intent, NMT is considered a medical treatment aimed at addressing the root causes of pain.

NMT requires a deep understanding of muscle fibers, posture, stress, and how all of these components work together. This specific approach helps treat a variety of conditions.

Conditions Treated by Neuromuscular Therapy

Research continues to explore the effectiveness of NMT for various ailments. Some conditions that have shown positive results with NMT include:

-
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
-
Calf Cramps
-
Headaches
-
Hip and Knee Pain
-
Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome
-
Plantar Fasciitis
-
Sciatica Symptoms
-
Tendonitis
-
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
-

Treatment and Techniques Used in Neuromuscular Therapy

During your treatment, the initial assessment and massage will follow the usual process. NMT is incorporated into your treatment time through various techniques. One key technique is the Golgi Tendon Organ (GTO) Release, which involves applying pressure near the muscle-tendon insertion for 10-30 seconds. This stimulates the Golgi tendon organ, helping the muscle relax.

Another common technique is Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching, which helps relax muscles at a neuromuscular level. Although these techniques may sound complex, the goal is to target specific muscle groups to alleviate pain and discomfort. It’s normal to feel a bit sore after treatment, but if soreness persists for more than three days, be sure to let your therapist know.

Benefits of Neuromuscular Therapy

NMT offers several benefits, including:
-
Pain relief
-
Correcting areas of muscle tension that affect proper muscle function
-
Treating trigger points
-
Improving range of motion in specific joints
-
Balancing the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
-
Increased energy
-
Improved posture
Since NMT is an ongoing treatment, it’s designed to help you manage and improve your condition in the long term. My goal is to work with your body and symptoms using a blend of techniques, including NMT and homecare strategies, to help you return to your optimal health.
